Who would like to be a News Reader?

Y2 students visited the Cayman Islands Television News studio on Wednesday, April 6th. They were able to see how the sound and images are recorded, as well as having the opportunity to sit in the news readers chairs! The visit was associated with their new IB Unit of Inquiry which is all about sound. The children enjoyed the visit and were very excited to be on the other side of the TV cameras.

Head Boy and Head Girl

Congratulations to Ethan Watler and Chanelle Scott - our Head Boy and Head Girl for 2010/11 - and Joelyn Scott and Omar Fellows, our Deputy Head Girl and Boy. They were selected from an excellent group of Probationary Prefects. They made a presentation to students and staff in assembly and the prefects and staff voted for the people they thought would best rise to the challenge of the roles. These students represent that choice and we look to them to set an example to and represent the voice of the student population. Well done to all four of them!

Year 6 Leavers Service 2010

Junior Batabano 2010

25 of our Year 6 students participated in this year's Junior Batabano parade. They had a good time and enjoyed performing their dance, on stage, in front of the Glass House. The theme for their costumes was "Flying High". Denique Gaynor was also presented with a prize for winning the Batabano T-shirt Design Competition. Well done to all!

Y1-3 Disco

On Saturday, March 6th, the PTA ran a special Disco for the year 1-3 students. They all had a great time! Congratulations to the winners of the dance competition - Rhoan Myers (Y3B), Clare Schofield (Y2S) and Gabrielle Campbell (Y1O). Thanks to all the parents and teachers who decorated the hall, served the food and drinks, played the music, contributed dance prizes and cleared up at the end!

Mathematics Workshops

On Monday, February 22nd, the PTA meeting took the format of Mathematics Workshops for parents. These were run by Ms. Caroline Dawes, Head of Teaching and Learning, and Mrs. Kate Marnoch, Head of Early Years Services, from the Department of Education Services. The workshops aimed to give parents a taster of the methodology being used to deliver the National Numeracy Strategy and introduce them to interactive learning. Parents attended both sessions - one for infants and one for juniors - where they became the students for a lesson. Ms. Dawes and Mrs. Marnoch took them through a typical lesson and explained the methodology used. The Numeracy Strategy aims to give children an understanding and concept of number and not just teach the mechanics of solving a 'sum'. The infant lesson showed how a story, involving numbers, can be used as a stimulus for a mathematical discussion and the juniors played a 'beanbag toss' game which gave practice in multiplication facts and their associated division fact. One parent asked if she could come back to school, she enjoyed the sessions so much! We hope to run another workshop later in the year and would encourage ALL parents to come and learn more about how their children are learning Mathematics.

Our Thoughts Are With Mrs. Rattray

Dear Readers,
We have some terrible news for everyone. Our Principal's husband has passed away. He worked at the Cayman Islands Northward Prison. At this time we give our thoughts, love, prayers and we will stick with her through her sorrow. It was just so sudden. To show respect the staff of SPS has put black ribbons on their shirts and on the schools fence to show that a person of genorisity has died.
